The alpha version of Wolfenstein 3D (Wolfenstein 3D Alpha) differs from the final release in many aspects.
This pre-release build, released in April 1992, includes only the first 10 levels of the first episode.
The differences affect gameplay, levels, enemies, and bugs.
🕹️ Gameplay
The alpha version does not include the difficulty level “Can I play, Daddy?”.
The final version has four difficulty levels: “Can I play, Daddy?”, “Don’t hurt me”, “Bring ’em on!”, and “I am Death incarnate!”.The pushwall behavior is incompletely implemented in the alpha build.
Cheat codes are already available via
F10 + keycombinations (for example,F10 + G= god mode).
🗺️ Levels
Some maps differ slightly from the final release.
For example:There’s a secret area behind Hitler’s portrait, but it’s inaccessible because a table blocks the entrance.
The first secret room near the exit is also a bit different.
There’s no episode selection screen at startup.
👾 Enemies
The alpha version lacks officers, mutants, and other enemy types that appear in the final game.
Enemies can shoot around corners, which doesn’t happen in the final version.
🐞 Bugs
The final boss doesn’t work properly, making it impossible to finish the game.
Gunfire can alert enemies in other rooms, which is not typical behavior in the final version.
